| Text | Asbjörn and Johanna Fortun born 1810 in Sogn. Norway - died 1860. Had five sons: Anders, Toge, Hendrik, Ellef, Martin, and three daughters: Breta, Gertrude, Christina. The father, mother and Christena died in Norway - the rest emigrated to the United States settling in Sterling Township, Vernon County, Wisconsin. Toge Fortun married Gyri Nelson Svaberg in 1863 and had seven sons: Albert T. born August 25, 1864, Nils died in infancy, Nels born on May 24, 1868, Joe Hendrick born August 13, 1870, Helen Marit July 29, 1872, Magnus April 28, 1878, Andreas Berentinus April 26, 1877, Christina April 15, 1879, Ole September 9, 1882, and Ellen Abigail October 29, 1884. Toge died June 28, 1903 and Gyri February 19, 1925. Buried in Viroqua Cemetery. Nils Nilson Svaberg and Marit Granum born in Valders, Norway May 25, 1812 and March 1, 1814; settled in Sterling Township, Vernon County, Wisconsin in 1858. Had two sons: Nels and Ole; four daughters: Ragnild, Gyri (who married Toge Fortun) Marit and Thoneta. Ole was killed as a young man in the Bristow Store by a knife one Saturday night while the owner was at supper. Albert T. Fortun born August 25, 1864 - died September 26, 1944. Attended Luther College three years being taken by his father by a team of horses and sleigh over the ice on the Mississippi River to Lansing, Iowa to catch the train to Decorah, Iowa. He taught Parochial School summers and later was a merchant and postmaster at Bristow, Wisconsin; Vernon County Treasurer; Assistant Cashier First National Bank in Viroqua for thirty years. Married Mary Lee June 25, 1906. She was born July 24, 1869 in Norfjord (Bergen) Norway and came to America at the age of two years. She was a daughter of Jörgen A. Lee born January 1, 1841 - died June 22, 1899 and Ingebor Marie Lefdahl, born April 22, 1835 - died 1880. They settled in Soldiers Grove, Wisconsin. Jörgen moved his family to Viroqua after his wife’s death. He was a cabinet maker and carpenter. They are buried in the North Kickapoo Cemetery. Albert T. and Mary Fortun had one daughter, Gladys Emma born November 21, 1908 - graduated from Viroqua High School 1926 and Madison College in 1927 then worked for the State of Wisconsin, Madison Rating Bureau, Dane County Extension Agent’s Office for several years, also the Securities & Exchange Commission.
